The Chachapoyas, also called the Warriors of the Clouds, were an Andean people living in the cloud forests of the Amazonas region.
The Incas conquered their civilization shortly before the arrival of the Spanish conquerors. The nearest ruins to Chachapoyas include the ruined city of Purunllacta – 40km south of the city and one of the likely capitals of the Chachapoyas people.
Another very interesting highlight of the area is the Pueblo de los Muertos and Carajía, two impressive cliff-face burial centres for the elite of this quite sophisticated culture.
However, the most famous and most worthwhile of all the Chachapoya archeological remains is Kuelap, a fabulous, huge citadel complex compared with our citadel of Machupicchu.
