The city of Cusco is called also the “archaeological capital of America” and the all this region was the heart of the Inca Empire, the most important and powerful civilization of the Americas. In 1983, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The city is also recognized as the Historical Capital of Peru in the country’s constitution. Today, the city attracts millions of tourists every year and the city is located in the Andes mountain range at an altitude of approximately 3,400 meters (11,150 feet) above sea level. The citadel of Machu Picchu is maybe the main reason that thousands of visitor travel to Peru and also appears in the top destinations list by U.S. News.
It is ranked as the eighth best place to visit. Machu Picchu was discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911, the ruins are today part of the UNESCO World Heritage sites, and since 2007 is one of the New Seven Wonders of the world.
