Our excursion is designed for travelers who would like to explore another side of the Colca Canyon without missing any highlights of the region. Those travelers that enjoy sharing activities with local people, short hikes and have different experiences. In this excursion Giardino shares with you a little bit of all the wonders and beauty of the Colca valley, while supporting the local economy and shows you the great hospitality of its people. The tour finishes in Puno, on Lake Titicaca.
National Reserve of Pampa Canahuas – The “Window “ view point – Caves of Mollepunko Town of Callalli – Town of Sibayo – Optional hike Canocota /La Calera – Town of Coporaque – Cruz del condor View point – Town of Chivay – Shared half day with a villager – Hot springs in Coporaque – Town of Lampa (called the pink town) on the route to Puno on Lake Titicaca.

Tour Itinerary

First Day:

Our departure will be at 7:30 am from Arequipa, driving around 190 km to the town of Coporaque. At the beginning of our excursion we will enjoy the majestic views of the Misti, Chachani and PichuPichu volcanoes before approaching the National Reserve of “Pampa Cañahuas”, where our vehicle will make a short stop to observe the wild vicuñas (one of the 4 types of South American camelids) in its natural habitat. At this point we will be about 3,400 meters above sea level. We keep driving forward to the upper part of the valley observing in our journey the natural scenery formed by different lakes and have a over view of the place from La Ventana (a rock formation called: the Window). – On the route we will have many stops for pictures. Our guide will offer an optional hike to the Caves of Mollepunko (recommended), In these caves we will appreciates artistic remains (Carvings and paintings) developed by the first inhabitants of the area, dedicated to hunting and gathering.  (This walk takes around 1, 50 hrs) After this visit we return to our transport and continue with our excursion observing on the route huge rock formations called “Los Castillos de Callalli” (The Callalli’s castles). We will arrive to the traditional town of Callalli; with its charming plaza and a wonderful view of the Mount Torreqaqa (Stone Mountain) or Saya Saya, which can be seen from anywhere in the village. We’ll make a short visit of the town and then keep driving until we reach the town of Sibayo, located in the upper part of Colca, 3,850 meters above sea level. Its name in Quechua language is Rumillaqta, which means “city of stone,” as nearly all of its streets, houses and churches are made from this material, making it one of the prettiest towns in the valley. In Sibayo town we will have our lunch with a local family (Time for sharing, learn above daily activities etc) and enjoy the Sibayo cuisine. After Lunch we will have time for visit the Plaza and surroundings. We take again our transportation and drive until Canocota where we will start our 2 ½ hr. hike forward to la Calera. Canacota village is located at 3,550 msl and during the walk we will appreciate a small Canyon, and later on –when we walk in parallel to the Colca River- we can observe a colourful variety of plants, shrubs, cactuses and birds. With some luck we might even see the “Giant hummingbird”. At the end of the tour we will arrive to la Calera, where our transportation will bring us to the town of Coporaque on the right side of the Valley, where our Lodge is located. After this excited day we have free time to relax rest.

*Important: The Hike Canacota – La Calera is optional. It will depend on Client’s physical conditions and acclimatization to altitude. In case that we avoid this walking, our transport will drive us direct to the town of Coporaque. (Optional visit to Coporaque surroundings or activities can be organized on request)

Dinner in your lodge and briefing for the next day activities. Overnight.

Second day:

We will have our breakfast very early in the morning and leave to the famous “Cruz del Condor” point. Arrive at “Cruz del Condor” and have enough time enjoy the deep view of the Canyon and if weather permits; majestic pictures of the flight of the condors. After a coordinated time, our guide will take you for a short walk near the Canyon (1 hour aprox.) On the way back to Chivay we’re going to visit the traditional village of Pinchollo and the “Antahuilque viewpoint”, where wonderful 1,500 year old terraces, constructed by the Collaguas, a culture well before the Incas’ time, can be observed. We also will make a stop at the look-out point of “Choquetico” with its hanging tombs “Tumbas colgantes“, and take a look to the litomaqueta, a model of the canyon terraces carved in a rock. We then continue our visiting Maca, an Andean community that experienced an earthquake in November of 1991, the village of Yanque with the most beautiful church in the valley and Chivay, capital of the Caylloma province ( time for exploring and pictures) Return to your Lodge in Coporaque for lunch. Around 14:00 hrs a Coporaque villager will take you to his home and will plan together with you the work to be done this afternoon. We cannot exactly define what this day will look like as it depends on the season and weekday. However, the normal activities – amongst others- include support in the fields, herding animals, the preparation of land for sowing, and/or harvesting.

*Please note: Local people do not speak English, so be prepared to use at least some Spanish words as well as speaking with your hands.

After this activity your hosting family will bring you to the Hot springs of Coporaque to enjoy a relaxing bath. Finish this visit our transport we will bring you back to the lodge. Dinner and overnight in your lodge.

Third Day:

Breakfast at 06:30 am. Today we’ll drive toward to Puno city on Lake Titicaca. On the route we will visit a Stone forest, interesting rock formations that have been eroded over millions of years by the wind, rain and humidity. (Here we will have a short walk to reach the forest). After this visit we keep our route making stops on the route for pictures like for example at Lagunillas Lagoons, where if we are lucky maybe get some pictures of Andean Flamingos and Andean Duck and birds. Continue with the driving we will reach the town of Lampa, a tiny town located about 25 kilometers from Juliaca, inside Puno´s highlands. The Santiago Apostol Church, built in stone is one of the most important buildings of the town of Lampa and here you will find a replica of the masterpiece of Michelangelo; “La Pieta”, capping a stunning black marble mausoleum of Mr. Torres.  How ever Lampa has other wonders; colorful adobe houses, kid’s games made of stone inside domestic patios etc.

We will have our lunch in a local restaurant in Lampa (No included in program) and continue to Puno city on Lake Titicaca. Arrive in Puno and transfer to your hotel.
